July 13th 2012: Homemade Apple Butter Recipe

It smells like Fall at my house!
I was playing around with an Apple Butter Recipe and it’s now perfected- and so easy. Apples, Spices and a Crock Pot- you are ready to go! I start my Apple Butter right before bed so when I wake up in the morning it’s ready for brunch- it just simmers on Low for 12 hours- this might scare you off- but do not be afraid- this is super delicious and reminds me of Thanksgiving.
Just follow the instructions below and Enjoy!

    Step 1:
Choose your apples- 3 pounds. (I like Gala or Fujis.)
Peel, core, and chunk cut your apples and place them into your Crock Pot- set it to Low.
    Step 2:
    Mix your Spices:
1/2 Cup Brown Sugar (I like to use dark but light will work also.)
    1 tsp. Cinnamon
    1/2 tsp. Clove
    1/2 tsp. All Spice
    Sprinkle of Ginger
    Sprinkle of Nutmeg
    Step 3:
Add your Spice Mix to your Apples (already in Crock Pot on Low) and give them a really good stir.
Add 1/2 Cup of Water- put the lid on- then walk away.
    Step 4:
Occasionally check your Crock Pot and stir it up every couple of hours.
(Like I said- I start mine right before bed. I usually wake up throughout the night- kids and a dog will do that- so whenever I walk by I lift the lid, give it a stir, then go on my way.)
    Step 5:
So 12 hours has passed and I scoop my what looks like chunky apple sauce into my Super-Blender until smooth. While my AB is smoothing I also add 6 TBSP of Sweet-N-Low because like everything else- I like sweet but not the calories, so it’s artificial sweetener here, use what you like and taste to your liking if needed. Pour it into a jar and that’s it!

would it still be good if the apples are over ripe?

I would think so, but I’ve only used ripe apples. I’d still try it out and maybe just keep an eye on them, maybe cook them less and add a little more sweetener. Good-Luck!

How long will the apple butter last in the jar?

So I set out on Pinterest to find an Apple Butter Recipe and found quite a few. I’m choosing yours because the picture of your Apple Butter looks much darker and thicker than the others, which to me is how Apple Butter should be. Can not wait to make it, I’ll let you know how it turns out, thanks!

Thank you Linda, I agree apple butter should be dark-that’s how my family has always had it. And yes please, let me know how yours turns out :)
